Identification of Pigments under the Microscope
Polarzing Light Microscopy Cours for Identification of Pigments under
the Microscope in LONDON! The cours is organised by International Academic Projects and our teacher is Tracy Chaplin. We are together
with a small internationa group of seven women.
Colleague Hanna Tempest, Freelance Easel Paintings Conservator shows how to use the Chelsea filter (red transmission). This can be used as a means of distinguishing blue and green pigments. We learned a lot this first day, and start to speak 'the language of pigments identification'. Never thought I would ever learn a new language!

acrylverf reinigen CAPS6

Cleaning of Acrylic Painted Surfaces (CAPS6)
Day one is a good kick-of with summaries of earlier CAPS meetings and tough lectures by Tom Lechner, Chris Stravoudis and Alan Phenix. Practical sessions about conductivity were given by Bronwyn Ormsby and Chris Stravoudis. What to do with these numbers we collected on paint samples about pH and conductivity...we are on our way 'all of us together ' to deal with it and possibly give an answer ...

Dear Ms. De Visser,
We are pleased to inform you that your application for the Cleaning of Acrylic Painted Surfaces (CAPS) workshop has been accepted. The workshop is being jointly presented by the Canadian Conservation Institute (CCI) and the Getty Conservation Institute (GCI) and is part of the GCI’s Research into Practice initiative that aims to ensure that critical new research moves in a timely way from the laboratory to the practicing professional. The workshop will take place at the Canadian Conservation Institute in Ottawa, Canada from August 12 – 15, 2014. In addition to providing conservators with the knowledge and methodologies gained from recent research on acrylic painted surfaces, the workshop will promote a dialogue between conservators and researchers to advance future research and strengthen the community of conservation professionals who work with these materials.

UVA permanente educatie workshop Aanbesteding 2012

Symposium Issues in Contemporary Oil Paint
Symposium Issues in Contemporary Oil Paint, shortly:ICOP is 'the symposium on contemporary oilpaint and paintings'. The symposium was held on 28 and 28 of March in Amersfoort under very good hostmanship of the Dutch Cultural Heritage headquaters. (RCE). Klaas Jan van den Berg chemist at RCE, was one of the organizers. The issues presented were about blanching of the paint layer, leakage of the paint after the painting was finished, pigment abrasion during cleaning. There were many restorers, chemists, and paint makers present from many countries all over the world.

conservation issues on paintings in situ
This is a joint meeting of the Picture Meeting and Kleurhistorisch Platform held in the Grote Kerk Breda.
A beautiful and light building, little bit cold so most of us kept their coats on. The lectures were great, can't talk about all of them, but I was very impressed by the conservation and research on a huge wallpainting of Sint Christopher in this church. The conservation was executed by Karin Keutgens and Bernard Delmotte. What interested me most was that they worked together with Perla Colombini Professor of Analytical Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry of the University of Pisa, she talked about the conservation science, method and results.
During lunch we were well served by mister Willem van der Vis, director of the Grote Kerk and his staff, hot soup was very welcome and made the day!

reducing risk to cultural heritage
Irene Karsten from CCI presents the methode for reducing risks |
Cultural
Heritage Agency of the Netherlands (RCE), International Centre for the Study of
the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM) and Canadian
conservation Institute (CCI) organised in November 2012 a 3 day Conference on
risk management. Besides theoretical information of the systematically approach
how to investigate values using a Value pie, and how an assessment should be
setup, plenty of case studies were illustrated. The case studies presented by
participants of workshops that took place on several occasions during the last
5 years under guidance of -for example- Robbert Waller and Stephan Michalski
and their students like Vesna Zivkovic captured a broad range of heritage, from
archaeological sites to wall painting in temples. We even had small workshops
on value assessment and making a value pie ourselves. We got a short hands-on
introduction of the CCI risk management methode and database. Next year in 2013 ICCROM will
launch a website ‘reducing risks to cultural heritage’.

Assisting Richard Wolbers workshop on New Methods of Cleaning
Richard Wolbers is back in Europe travelling for 6 weeks to several
countries, UK, France as well as the Netherlands where he is giving
right now his famous lectures on ‘New Methods of Cleaning (painted) Surfaces. The
restorers association Restauratoren Nederland (RN) invited him to come to the Netherlands. Richard
is famous for both his content and way of teaching. That’s not only my point of
view, as I’m very fond of his lectures… but speaking to an English chemist
teacher/paper restorer that specially came over for the theoretical part, I
understood that Richards teaching methods are famous too. The Englishman was
not the only foreigner, as the Danish
Statens Museum
for Kunst sends her restorer too. The theoretical part was given at the
Reinwardt Akademie in Amsterdam
serving good meals and coffees, the forthcoming 3 days we shall be hosted by
RCE Rijswijk. For me it’s the third time and this time an honour to assist him in
the lab and a great pleasure. One of the participants writes a report to be
published in RN’s magazine Aux Courant….To be continued.

The Structure of Paintings and the Mechanical Properties of Cultural Materials
Last week at Institut National du Patriomoine (INP) Paris,
Marion Mecklenburg senior researcher at the Smithsonian institute gave a
workshop about the examination of mechanical and dimensional behaviour of
artists’ materials with respect to changes in ambient relative humidity it is
possible to identify those materials that are at risk. As formulated by the
INP. During the course we got familiar with the results of tensile tests,
swelling isotherms, and restrained testing of artists’ linen canvases, hide
glues, gessoes, and oil paints. While many of these materials together can act
as a composite painting structure, it is possible to show which individual
layer is developing either high or low stresses with changes in humidity and
both temperature. After dragging us first into the physics, Marion showed us illustrations of actual
damaged paintings and relates their damage to specific properties of individual
artists’ materials and the environments inducing the damage. Additionally, the
goal of the workshop is that from examining the properties and performance of
the individual artists’ materials we shall be able to determine the properties required
for possible consolidating adhesives in order to properly restructure a damaged
painting.
During the workshop
I grew more familiar to the matter but certainly need more study.

Restauratie: perceptie, beslissing en behandelingen. Wij doen het in Nederland goed! Toch?
Bill Wei is
disciplines: collectiebeheerders, conservatoren, curatoren, kunsthistorici, museumdirecteuren,
natuurwetenschappers en restauratoren.
Filosoof
Ronde 2:
Ronde 4:
essentie en daaruit voortkomende onderzoeksvragen. Iedereen schrijft in 3
zeven groepen zodat Bill veertien fundamentele onderzoeksvragen gepresenteerd
kreeg.

Workshop ‘Tear repair’ by Ulricke Fischer Conservation and Science Departments from Doerner Institute Munich. The tear repair technique was developed by Professor W. Heiber from Hochschule fur Bildende Kunst in Dresden.
Weaving broken treats using dental tools, creates strong bonds, but is a difficult and time consuming job. During the workshop I consentrated on repairing sharpcuts using ‘the trecker’. Another invention by Heiber, that helps holding the treats together. Although it gave a good result, I still have to improve my skills.

'Conservation Treatment Methodology:Restorers enlightenment'
In 2007 Object conservator Barbara Appelbaum wrote her second book 'Conservation Treatment Methodology'.
Restauratoren Nederland invited her to give a masterclass on this subject. During the first day the theoretical session brought about a lively discussion between the thirty participants from different conservation discipline, art historians, scientists and other field related disciplines. The second day focused on three case studies brought up by the Tropenmuseum in which we were challenged to solve conservation dilemma’s using the methodology.
